Johnson was the first African American president of Fisk University. Inscribed by author on title page, "To Howard Kester, with esteem, Charles S. Johnson." Howard Kester was a Southern preacher, organizer and union activist. Kester noted on front endpaper "Return to Howard Kester Black Mountain, N.C." Boards protected in a semi-rigid mylar sleeve.
