Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second issue with no number on the title page and no errata slip on page 25, "Additional Cocktails" list present on pages 282, 283, and the two page Booth's Dry Gin advertisement before the title page. Octavo, pp 287. Bound in the publisher's art deco style original pictorial metallic boards over black cloth spine with gilt lettering. The design of this book reflected the art deco decoration of the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London. This second issue released shortly after the first edition, with Booth's Gin seeing an opportunity to promote their product and benefitting from the product endorsement of Harry Craddock, head bartender at The Savoy. Inscribed to the front endpaper: "with compliments Arthur Higgett, Manor House Chingford Hatch | Xmas 1933". We have seen another copy of this edition inscribed in the same hand "With compliments Booths Dry Gin, A.J. Higgett". Although our copy was inscribed at The Manor hotel, Higgett was most likely an employee of Booths, signing and gifting copies of this book. Internally the book is clean, no foxing or browning, there is a previous owner's name in pencil to the top of the ffep; the boards are a bit rubbed as often found, mainly to the gold leaf, binding is tight and solid, spine clean and unfaded, gilt lettering on spine remains clear. Overall a Very Good copy of this very collectible book.
Condition: Very good. Inscribed early printing of this crackling cocktail classic, with delightful art-deco style illustrations. Full of vivacity and vigor, this book from "the king of cocktail shakers" perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the era. Amid the hundreds cocktail recipes are brightly colored vignettes of flappers, Monopoly men, artists, and other revellers. The scattered about commentary is dripping with bons mots, from the Third Rail Cocktail that is "better than 11,000 volts," to the Jabberwock Cocktail, which will "make you gyre and gimble in the wabe until you brillig all right, all right." An endlessly entertaining (and useful) read a fitting artifact of the Jazz Age with a convivial inscription. 7.25'' x 4.5''. Original orange cloth, lettered in black to front board and spine. Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated throughout in color. 238 pages. Lacking dust jacket. Inscribed by Craddock to print history page ("Here's How! / Harry Craddock / January 14/1937) and again to preface page (To Mr. A. G F / with the best wishes of the author/ sincerely hoping you will deliver much pleasure in Reading and Drinking this book, / H. Craddock"). Some wear and soil to cloth and edges of text block, minor toning to spine, light scattered foxing to text. Illustrations bright.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. CRADDOCK, Harry; RUMBOLD, Gilbert (Illustrator). The Savoy Cocktail Book. London: Constable & Company, 1930. First edition, second issue with no page number on title-page and no errata slip on page 25; "Additional Cocktails" list present on pages 282-3. Considered by many to be the coolest book in the world, The Savoy Cocktail Book contains over 700 cocktails recipes compiled by Harry Craddock, the bartender at the Savoy Hotel, accompanied by Gilbert Rumbold's fun and colourful Jazz Age illustrations. Includes a section on wines, with an introduction by Colette. Published shortly after the first printing, this second printing is bound with four colour plates of Booth's Gin adverts illustrated by Gilbert Rumbold, including one featuring Harry Craddock behind the bar endorsing the gin brand: "After many years' experience at the Savoy Hotels I can strongly recommend BOOTH'S DRY GIN. It is always dependable in quality, ensures complete satisfaction and is essential for real cocktails - that is why you will find it at the Savoy, Berkeley and Claridges Hotels and Simpsons Restaurant." This is a nice association with the ink stamp of Booth's Distilleries to front endpaper. Booth's is the only gin brand mentioned in any of the recipes of The Savoy Cocktail Book, appearing in the "Booksellers' (Special) Pride" in the "Additional Cocktails" section. In 1930 when The Savoy Cocktail Book was published, Booth's was one of the biggest, oldest, and most prestigious gin brands. 287, [1] pp. 8vo, qtr cloth, wear at top of spine with slight loss, a couple of small splits along the joints, gt lettering on spine rubbed; dec. boards, some rubbing/wear. 2 drink-related small vintage stickers to front endpaper. With a Danish contemporary drinks single-page advert tipped-in after the half-title. Ink stamp of Booth's Distilleries to front endpaper. Apart from a few spots of browning to p. 195, contents are clean and bright. A good, bright and attractive copy.

The decorations are by Gilbert Rumbold New and enlarged edition with many drinks for special occasions 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" This book is an example of the law of unintended consequences. For its publication, we have the puritans who pushed through Prohibition to thank. Though born in Gloucestershire, Harry Craddock, this book s author, had immigrated to the United States and might never have returned to the UK had not America made his professional illegal. After passage of the 18th Amendment, he returned to the UK and became one of the most famous bartenders of his era working at the uber-glam American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London. This cocktail book of seven hundred fifty recipes followed. First released in 1930, it became the gold standard of cocktail books. This new and enlarged edition first published in 1933 contains additional recipes and an updated the cover design, switching out the austere silver for a festive red, green, and yellow-based design. If everyone knew even a little about the absorbing subject of absorbing alcohol there would be even less Prohibition in the United States than there is now. --Harry Craddock.
