WHARTON, Edith. ROMAN FEVER AND OTHER STORIES. New York: Scribner's Sons, 1970. 8vo. Illustrated wrappers. 238 pages. A collection of beautifully written stories set in Italy, France and America, and they are powerful portraits of women who live in "The world of propriety" the turn of the century. They tell of the emotions women feel in love, in jealously, when they long for children or seek independence - and when their passions lead them to overstep the bounds laid down by exacting conventions. Good.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
First edition thus: Number 9 in the short-lived "Selected Short Stories by Great Writers" series devised by James H. Schmidt in 1982 with the intent of providing quality reading material for daily commuters that was inexpensive enough to share. Originally issued in 4 slipcased volumes each of which housed 12 map-folded pamphlets. Most of the individual pamphlets included a single short story though a few had an additional story and/or poem. Each of the 48 pamphlets in the series is 24 pages (including illustrated covers) printed on both sides of a single sheet folded up like a map. Fine. Increasingly scarce. "THESE TALES ARE DEDICATED TO ALL TRAVELLERS, RIDERS ON THIS EARTH TOGETHER".
