It was a multi faceted expedition, planned to last three years, to .set up an ice cap station to be manned by three men, relieved each five months. As an inter-services enterprise the explorers were to be supplied from the air. On one air supply mission the RAF Hastings aircraft making the drop crashed. There was then an additional 11 British servicemen, and a US Air Force officer stuck on the ice, plus 30 dogs and one crashed aircraft. They were stranded in icy, cramped and difficult conditions for nine days before most (including the few injured men) were rescued by a USAF aircraft which landed nearby , the last nine going out later on a ski equipped Dakota.
