Après les victoires de Bonaparte en Italie, il prendra le commandement de l'armée des Alpes (1797). Il mettra tout son poids dans la réorganisation de l'armée autrichienne et la préparation de la rervanche contre Napoléon. Désavoué, " il consacra sa retraite à une réflexion sur l'art de la guerre et il publia en 1814 des Principe de la stratégie, illustrés par la campagne d'Allemagne de 1796, suivis en 1819 d'une Histoire de la campagne de 1799. Théoricien de la guerre de mouvement telle qu'on venait de la redécouvrir, ces traités ont une haute tenue intellectuelle et annoncent par bien des aspects la réflexion de Clausewitz."
