The binding has been preserved since new in a leather jacket. A book of this age would be descibed as near fine. There has been some light insect damage which has affected the title of the frontis and a small spot at the top and its tissue protection, plus the rep. the endpapers have some slight spotting and the title page has a faint watermark along the foredge. the front pastedown has an inscription dated 1874 . the pages are white with gilt edges all round showing only the faintest of thumbing. The Dark Blue full leather binding is stunning with only the slightest endwear. , the spine has gilt decorated edges and six gilt decorated panels . Silk bookmark. Leather 5 band spine with gilt decoration and lettering. All gilt edges. Wood boards are decorated in printed McDonald tartan, the front board has an oval image of Robert Burns lacquered on, the rear board has a similar image, of Burns's Cottage. There are four mother of pearl studs on the rear board to stop the board rubbing when resting on a surface. there is a gift inscription on the flyleaf dated 1876; this is a presentation from a Lodge in Dalry at the heart of Burns country. Full page steel engravings. An extremely unusual and very Scottish copy. Tartanware, is a spin-off from Mauchline ware which was produced from Sycamore wood at Mauchline in Ayrshire. Smiths', one of the main producers found a method of printing tartan designs onto paper and transfering these onto wood. these designs were extremely popular in mid Victorian era. this is an extremely good example of this craft.
