Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a lyrical examination of the boundless faculties of memory, delving into its powerful grip on emotion, reason, and art. The author traces the evolution of this faculty, from its biological roots in animal behavior, to its highest manifestation in human consciousness. The author's sweeping narrative connects our ability to recall the past to the construction of personal identity, the appreciation of natural beauty, and the creation of artistic masterpieces. This book is more than just a scientific or historical account; it is an insightful meditation on the profound ways in which memory shapes our experience of the world. The author argues that the treasures of art and science, the colors of our lives, and the very fabric of human experience are all woven from the threads of memory. This book is not merely a study of a cognitive function, but a celebration of memory's vital role in the human condition, inviting readers to marvel at its complexities and appreciate its enduring power. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
First edition, published anonymously, of one of Roger's most beloved poems. Byron, "perhaps Rogers's most notable admirer" (ODNB), praised it in a letter to Thomas Moore: "His elegance is really wonderful - there is no such thing as a vulgar line in the book". "The two-part poem, written in elegant but relaxed heroic couplets, begins with a nostalgic tour around the village of Rogers's childhood, and moves through various scenes to explore and illustrate the 'associating principle', of the faculty of memory. It concludes with a poignant invocation to Rogers's dead brother Thomas" (ODNB). ESTC T55698. L. Marchand ed., Byron's Letters and Journals, Vol. III, 1973, p. 107. Quarto (237 x 177 mm). Early 20th-century sprinkled quarter calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering to compartments, marbled sides. Contemporary ownership inscription of one "Ja.[?] Steen" to title page. Small remnant of book label to front pastedown. Binding square and bright, headcap a bit worn, light browning from binder's paste to margins of first and last leaves, occasional marks to contents, but otherwise internally bright and clean. A very good copy.
