His elder brother Peter may have been more aptly named for the part, but it was Michael, the fourth son of Sylvia and Arthur Llewellyn Davies, who was the original 'little half and half, the half human, half supernatural Peter Pan, who hopes never to be compelled to grow up and face life's harsh realities. The playwright struck up a friendship with Michael's three older brothers after he encountered them playing in London's Kensington Gardens, an area that would become the first location for the Neverland of his most enduring work. But soon it was Michael who was 'The One'. Touched by his grandfather George du Maurier's 'sixth sense', Michael lived the fantasy life more intensely than any of them, even participating in a hauntingly accurate prediction of events to come as Peter Pan daring himself to drown in the mermaids' lagoon, fascinated by the prospect of an afterlife. Nightmares and an unnatural terror of water ensued, but no one intervened or thought to stop the obvious root to his subconscious fears. Indeed, when Michael's parents, themselves the inspiration for Mr and Mrs Darling in the play, died one after the other, leaving the brothers orphans and real 'Lost Boys', Barrie's involvement was so entrenched that the enigmatic, and by now very rich, playwright offered himself up as guardian. As the years went by, Michael and Barrie became ever closer, their Neverland transferring to the Highlands and islands of Scotland, where, still driven by the need to write from life, Barrie's otherworldly preoccupations steered their fantasy life afresh. Until one day it seemed to Michael time to break free. A true story of friendship, love and childhood innocence, shot through with joy, but terminated by tragedy 'The Real Peter Pan' is the moving story of a boy who would never grow up.

A catalogue of remarkable artifacts from Barrie's life, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Peter Pan. James Matthew Barrie's fame is based largely on that iconic work of twentieth-century drama and children's literature, "Peter Pan: The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up", a cultural juggernaut that flew into the hearts of theater-goers and readers. Always interested in the nature of childhood, Barrie's devotion to the young Llewelyn Davies brothers signaled an experiment with form that produced the play "Peter Pan". Its success, following its 1904 premiere, assured Barrie a permanent place in popular culture and spawned an avalanche of novelties that eventually overshadowed most of Barrie's other works, including his insightful later plays and essays. The story of Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family has also entered the realm of legend, having been explored in books, plays, and the recent motion picture "Finding Neverland". The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University holds a collection of manuscripts and books documenting Barrie's life and has put a selection of them on display to mark Peter Pan's 100th anniversary. This accompanying catalogue features images and descriptions of objects from the exhibition, forming a timeline that traces the development of Barrie's work in connection with his life. Timothy Young's prefatory essay discusses the ongoing impact of this enigmatic genius. Ref XX 3.

What is Peter Pan all about? Many of us realise that there is a bit more to the stories than a simple fantasy about flying away to a wonderful place in which to play, and that there is something psychologically rather dark about the events in the stories. But J. M. Barries work has not previously been considered from the perspective of either the science of his time, or the insights of modern cognitive psychology. This book explores the texts of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906) and Peter and Wendy (1911), and argues that Barrie describes the limited mental abilities of infants and animals in order to illuminate the structure of human adult cognition. Barrie had a well-informed, post-Darwinian perspective on the biological origins of human behaviour. The idea that human consciousness, cognition, culture and sense of moral responsibility could have origins in animal behaviour was deeply shocking to the nineteenth century intelligentsia, and remains controversial in some sections of academia even today. Barries work contains many insights into what is now referred to as mental representation and theory of mind, areas of cognitive psychology that have been examined scientifically only in the last few decades. Barrie also reflects on the nature of consciousness in a way that parallels modern interests. As books with a complex scientific undercurrent, Barries Peter Pan stories rank alongside Lewis Carrolls Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass, which engage with complex issues of mathematics and logic, and Charles Kingsleys The Water-Babies, which explores the implications of evolution for human society.
