First editions, limited collective issue of the first three books in the Canongate Myth series, each book signed by its respective author, number 1,090 of 1500 sets thus. With the accompanying essay by Philip Pullman, commissioned for the box set and signed by Pullman. The Myth Series is a collection of novellas in which traditional stories from various cultures are reimagined and rewritten. The project was first conceived in 1999 by Jamie Byng, the owner of the independent publishing house Canongate, and the first three titles in the series were published simultaneously on 21 October 2005. Eighteen works have now been published within it, covering mythology from the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia, including A. S. Byatt's influential Ragnarok (2011). Atwood's The Penelopiad was instrumental in carving out space for women in both Greek mythology and popular culture. Though Atwood "publicly stated that she never intended for it to be a feminist symbol, The Penelopiad became just that. Atwood's portrayal of Penelope set off a chain reaction, paving the way for more and more retellings to focus on and celebrate female characters" (Mactaggart). Catriona Mactaggart, "How Greek Mythology Is Being Rewritten Through A Feminist Lens", The Independent, 1 June 2021. Together 4 items: Three volumes, octavo. Original black covers, spines lettered in grey. With illustrated dust jackets. One pamphlet, original illustrated covers. Housed together in original black illustrated slipcase, lettered in gilt on spine, and unopened shrinkwrap. A fine set.
