Item Description: London: John Murray, 1818. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Four volumes. First edition, first printing. Association copy, previously owned by Louisa Taylor of Bifrons, Kent, with her ownership inscription to the title page of Volume II. Finely bound in blue calf and blue marbled boards, with contrasting maroon title labels to the spines, lettered in gilt, spines decorated in gilt, boards decorated in blind, blue marbled endpapers. Very good, with rubbing to the boards and edges, external hinges of spines reinforced, pages slightly trimmed, former owner Elizabeth Eliot's pencil inscriptions to front endpapers, a few faint and scattered spots to the otherwise fresh pages. A clean and beautiful copy, with an excellent provenance. Housed in a custom navy clamshell box with morocco spine, five raised bands, lettered in gilt. Gilson A9. This copy of Northanger Abbey was previously owned by Louisa Taylor, wife of Edward Taylor, an elected Member of Parliament for Canterbury from 1807-1812 and Jane Austen's first romantic interest. Austen first met Edward Taylor in 1794 while visiting her brother Edward Austen at Rowling, his home near Canterbury. In 1796, she visited Bifrons, the Taylor family's estate, and wrote to her sister Cassandra about "Him, on whom I once fondly doated." In subsequent letters, Austen remarked on Taylor's "beautiful dark eyes," and, although their romance developed little past her infatuation, Taylor clearly left a lasting impression on Austen. Edward Taylor married Louisa Taylor (née Beckington) of Kent in 1802. (Jane Austen the Woman: Some Biographical Insights, George Holbert Tucker, 1994.) Published together posthumously, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are, interestingly enough, Austen's first and last novels, both of which are set in Bath. Northanger Abbey, a satire featuring a young woman with a penchant for Gothic novels, was Austen's first completed work and was originally to be published under the title Susan. In contrast, Persuasion, the story of two sweethearts' second chance at love, was a mature work, which Austen began shortly after completing Emma (1815). Signed. Bookseller Inventory # JA012

Item Description: London: J. M. Dent & Co.; E. P. Dutton & Co., New York, 190709, 1907. 6 volumes, octavo. Original gilt decorative vellum, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, pictorial endpapers. Northanger Abbey: front hinge starting, rear hinge partly cracked but holding, but text block sound, Sense & Sensibility: discolouration to rear board from dampstaining, also affecting final few pages. Otherwise a beautiful set, in bright vellum. Each volume with 24 colour plates by C. E. Brock. First Brock editions of the complete novels of Jane Austen, rare in the original vellum bindings. C. E. Brock (18701938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen within Macmillan's 18957 series (with introductions by Austin Dobson), Brock illustrating only Pride and Prejudice, and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other 5 titles. This series was only illustrated in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and certainly his vision of Austen's world, its gentle graces and sharp ironies, is best expressed, as here, in colour. Furthermore, the colourful costumes and interior decor depicted in these illustrations are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio. Item Description: London: Richard Bentley (successor to Henry Colburn); Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh; Cumming, Dublin; and Galignani, Paris, 1833, 1833. Octavo. Original vertical fine-ribbed purple cloth, scroll ornament and Greek key border to boards in blind, spine divided by quadruple blind rule and lettered in gilt with series title, an ornament and title of the work (Gilson's third state binding). Armorial bookplate of English sportsman, soldier and politician William Slaney Kenyon-Slaney to pastedown. Tanned spine with gently bumped ends, faint dampstains to boards, top edge dusty, inner hinge cracked but holding, endpapers, plate paper and tissue guard slightly foxed, clean contents throughout, a very good copy. Engraved frontispiece and extra engraved vignette title, on plate paper, inserted between half-title and title. Both signed "Pickering" at left foot and "Greatbatch" at right. First Bentley edition, second overall, also the first one-volume edition. Bentley bought the copyrights of all Jane Austen's works to include them in his Standard Novels series, apparently aiming at the private buyer, as circulating libraries still had copies of the originals. Bentley later reissued the volumes as a set, but this copy is from the original individual issue, numbered XXVIII in the Standard Novels series. Bookseller Inventory # 115929
