Edith Olivier's Night Thoughts of a Country Landlady (1943) is a quiet, observant, and often gently humorous portrait of English rural life during the Second World War, drawn from the wartime diaries of Miss Emma Nightingale. It captures the upheaval, strangeness, and unexpected warmth that came when evacuees, soldiers, and assorted "strange guests" filled a once-quiet village home. This scarce book is illustrated with full page drawings by Rex Whistler, possibly his last published work having been killed in 1940. Edith Maud Olivier MBE (31 December 1872 - 10 May 1948) was an English writer, also noted for acting as hostess to a circle of well-known writers, artists, and composers in her native Wiltshire. Its a used book, therefore normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. A couple of brown spots to edge of papers at the top end, small wear to top of first blank page, where a label was taken off, otherwise this a a lovely book in nice clean, order. 86 pages all intact and nice tight binding. Miss Emma Nightingale, whose Night Thoughts are presented by Edith Olivier in this volume was one of those cultivated and country old ladies to be met with in most villages, supremely interested in local affairs, generous to the poor, stern to the evil doer, pardoning to the penitent. She was not well off, but she had never thought of taking in "Paying Guests", and only a European War could have driven her to such a revolution. Cut adrift from her old regular ways, and ardently seeking means for putting into practise the high hearted patriotism in which she had been nurtured, Miss Nightingale now filled her house with strangers, and in the night she mused on their strange ways. The book abounds in amusing incidents and anecdotes, and reflects, with knowledge pathos and humour, the steadfast spirit of rural England, patiently adapting itself to the growing hardships of war. Its a beautifully and wittily illustrated by Rex Whistler. REX WHISTLER (illustrator).
