Paul Auster was born February 3, 1947 in Newark, New Jersey. Born to two Austrian Jewish parents, who divorced his senior year of high school. After graduating from Columbia University, Auster would work for a time in Paris as a translator, translating for various French poets. Auster would move back to the US in 1974, and would gain acclaim both for his work editing the 1982 "Random House Book of Twentieth-Century French Poetry" and his memoir "The Invention of Solitude". His next releases, "City of Glass", "Ghosts", and "The Locked Room" would release sequentially and be loosely related, coming together in "The New York Trilogy" released in 1987. Hailed for it's inventive use of the detective genre to explore questions of identity, space, language, and literature, the novels comprising "The New York Trilogy" have seen great commercial and critical success. They have spawned several adaptations including graphic novels, text with illustrations, and two plays. 1386150. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. First UK Edition, First Printing, First State Dust Jacket.
