Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Weil, Simone. The need for roots : prelude to a declaration of duties towards mankind / translated by Arthur Wills ; with a preface by T. S. Eliot. Abingdon: Routledge, 2002 (this copy post-2007). Routledge Classics Series. Paperback, near fine. Previous price label to reverse. Binding strong and tight. xvi, 298pp. + publisher advertisements. Contents clean and bright. The Need for Roots was first published in French in 1949, titled L'Enracinement. The first English translation was published in 1952. Like all of Weil's books, it was published posthumously. The work diagnoses the causes of the social, cultural and spiritual malaise which Weil saw as afflicting 20th century civilisation, particularly Europe but also the rest of the world. 'Uprootedness' is defined as a near universal condition resulting from the destruction of ties with the past and the dissolution of community. Weil specifies the requirements that must be met so that peoples can once again feel rooted, in a cultural and spiritual sense, to their environment and to both the past and to expectations for the future. The book discusses the political, cultural and spiritual currents that ought to be nurtured so that people have access to sources of energy which will help them lead fulfilling, joyful and morally good lives. A leading theme is the need to recognise the spiritual nature of work. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. 'The highest ecstasy is the attention at its fullest' The Need For Roots is Simone Weil's radical spiritual, political and poetic vision, diagnosing the causes of societal disillusion afflicting the 20th century. In 1943, the final year of her life, Weil worked in London for the Free French government in exile. There she was commissioned to outline a 'plan for the renewal of Europe' after the devastation of Nazism, this book was the result. 'Concern for the symbol has completely disappeared from our science. And yet, if one were to give oneself the trouble, one could easily find, in certain parts at least of contemporary mathematics. symbols as clear, as beautiful, and as full of spiritual meaning as that of the circle and mediation. From modern thought to ancient wisdom the path would be short and direct, if one cared to take it.'.

Add to basketLATER EDITION. Half title + TP + half title + [9]-249 + [251]-[256] + half title + [259] = Table + [260] = Printer's information, Octavo. Later [23rd] Edition.Weil's most influential work, L'enracinement (The Need for Roots) diagnoses the causes of the social, cultural, and spiritual malaise that she saw afflicting the citizens of 20th century Europe. Here, she proposes the need to be rooted not to spaces or ideas, but to temporality and history: a past, a present, and a future. Without leaning into empty teleologies, Weil draws on the significance of a hopeful orientation toward a better future, a future that can only be realized insofar as its roots in the past are sufficiently nourished and realized. Far from endorsing a conservative attachment to nationalism, the fetishization of the family, or the romancing of ties to pastoral land and community, Weil maintains her unconventional spiritual approach and her leftist leanings. Her abstract sentimentality does not last for long, though, as she addresses significant political, cultural, and spiritual threats to her community in France and the broader workers' movements across the globe. Offering an analysis of this malaise which deviates from the traditional, Marxist assessment of their economic and political positions, Weil presents a more emotionally sensitive perspective based on her experiences working with these communities. Moreover, she offers a way in which this present malaise can be transformed into a better future without resorting to violent resolutions. Despite having fought in the Spanish Civil War, Weil was a committed pacifist, and this book demonstrates her genius in providing an alternative to violent revolution. Exploring behavioral changes that emphasize duty, structure, responsibility, and obligation as the ways in which roots to the community and to humanity itself are nourished and fostered, Weil examines the capacity for immediate change that each individual can harness. Original publisher's ivory wraps with green lettering to both covers and the spine. There is a very small chip to the top of the spine. Typical of books printed on such poor quality paper, the text is lightly browned throughout. Overall, a lovely copy of this strident presentation of Weil's thought. Add to basketLATER (23rd ) EDITION. Half title + TP + half title + [9]-249 + half title + [253] = Table + [255] = Printer's information, Octavo. Later Edition.Weil's most influential work, L'enracinement (The Need for Roots) diagnoses the causes of the social, cultural, and spiritual malaise thatshe saw afflicting the citizens of 20th century Europe. Weil insists that individuals need to be culturally and spiritually rooted to their past, present, and future if they are ever to lead fulfilling, joyful, and morally rich lives. The book also discusses the political, cultural and spiritual currents that must be nurtured so that people can access the sources of energy needed to maintain their "rootedness" and avoid destroying their ties to the past and the sense of community which is so essential to a satisfying and fulfilledlife. Having analyzed the problem and outlined a broad solution, Weil then offers specific suggestions for the proper way to rebuild France after the war, calling for a greater emphasis on the religious, political and social structures that would enhance the lives of individuals. Sheargued strongly for the centrality of a sense of duty towards community, arguing that it is not enough for us to declare empty support for various human rights, we need to follow through with the obligations those rights entail - rather than just continuing along the time-worn path of self-righteousness and rootlessness. Weil's warnings about the state of the modern world and the ways in which human beings could try to resolve these issues, continue to resonate even today. Original publisher's ivory wraps with green lettering to both covers and the spine. There is a very small chip to the top of the spine.
