Stated Second Editions. Twelvemo. 17cm. Later oatmeal buckram with black leather title label titled in gilt, with a pencil note suggesting the binding is by Chivers. Some darkening of the cloth and a little wear to the label, otherwise a very good, neat little biding. Internally clean, bookplate and ownerships, dated 1915-1916, of Forrest Brisbine Spaulding. Spaulding was one of the most influential and energetic figures in early twentieth century library outreach, and his efforts put in place much of the apparatus and conceptual infrastructure still in use in community and urban library outreach efforts today. The ownership dates tally with the period that Spaulding was building collections to send to soldiers stationed on the Mexican Border, shortly before he became Director of Libraries for Peru in the 20's. A firm believer in the freedom of education, he was also much invested in setting up literacy resources for working men and women during the Depression. He was firmly anti-censorship, and believed that free access to education and information was a fundamental human and civil right. It is not an exaggeration to call Spaulding a great man. The three small run, small press chapbooks from Flying Fame bound together in this volumes retain their original Lovat Fraser designed buff paper wraps, and aside for a little wear to the gutter on The Bull, are all in very good condition. Also present are two single sheet poems by Hodgson laid in at the front, also decorated by Fraser; a Second Impression of the poem "February" with colored decorations, and a Second Impression of "A Song", uncolored. Flying Fame issued the poems on single folded sheets for Twopence uncolored, and Fourpence colored, usually to accompany a new poetry chapbook. Altogether a jury-rigged but charming little collection of Hodgson's work, with a significant rare book world association.
