Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Original state, 219 p. with many of the pages uncut/unread. Original paper boards has the plain paper over-wrap acting as a dust jacket. Spine paper is completely gone. Owner's inscription on front pastedown. pages foxed and uneven cut - very early binding. Pages loose but still attached. No torn or marked pages noted.Publication date on title page appears to read MDCCI (1701) but upon closer inspection you can see where part of the L was worn off as well as the entire X as there is an indentation in the paper but no ink present. Correct publication date is MDCCLX (1760). Rough shape - see images.

First edition. xxxvi, 216, 16pp. Distinguished from other edition of the same year by 'G. Strachan' not 'George Strahan' in the imprint. Contemporary gilt-tooled speckled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed. Early inked initials to FEP, else internally clean and crisp. The first edition of anatomist and man-midwife James Douglas' (bap. 1675, d. 1742) popular dissecting guide; initially intended to be the commencement of a series of handbooks comparing the anatomy of dogs and humans that ultimately never came to fruition. The work was republished in 1760 and 1775 with a Latin translation (1729). 'As for the comparative part of this treatise, or the interlacing the descriptions of the human muscles with these of the canine, that needs no apology. The many useful discoveries known from the dissection of quadrupeds, the knowledge of the true structure of divers parts of the body, of the course of the blood and the chyle, and of the use and proper action of the parts, that are chiefly owing to this sort of dissection; these, I say, give a very warrantable plea for insisting upon it, tho' it may be censured by the vulgar.' Bookplate of the Earl of Macclesfield, and armorial blindstamp on the first two leaves. FIRST EDITION of Douglas?s first book, which became a standard work for a large part of the eighteenth century. ?He was throughout his life a laborious student of everything relating to his profession, but was most distinguished as an anatomist? (DNB). He practised midwifery, hence, presumably, the special section on the muscles of women. Russell 266. A variant exists with ?for G. Strachan? rather than ?for George Strahan? in the imprint.
