Hardcover. First Edition; Second Printing. Very Good+ in a Very Good clipped dust jacket. Bottom corner of front flap clipped. Small closed tears on spine crown and front gutter. ; 256 pages.
First American edition, first printing. 256pp. Originally written in 1913-14, Maurice is one of the earliest English novels to openly explore themes of homosexuality. Forster not only explores these themes, but they sit as the hopeful center of the life of the protagonist. In doing so, Forster begins to revolutionize the cultural outlook on homosexuality, driven by the rigid Edwardian society which he critiques. However, despite it's cultural and literary gravitas, Forster suppressed his fifth novel until after his death, not to be published until 1971. In a "Terminal Note" written in 1960, Forster acknowledges societal changes towards homosexuality, but laments his doubt that it will ever be legal, for, as he states, Parliament is obliged "to appear to think." Despite the seeming despair, his final word on the societal trial of homosexuality is one of hope that "Maurice may get off." [Kirkpatrick A39b]. Front flap corner clipped by publisher, faint foxing to endpapers and jacket verso, else fine in very near fine dust jacket, in mylar cover. Full black cloth, gilt and blind spine titles, top edge stain yellow, in dust jacket.

The first edition, first impression. In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper. With a loosely inserted typed notice from the publisher, requesting a review in the Italian daily newspaper 'Il Gazzettino'. The publisher explains that 'although "Maurice" was completed in 1914, Forster decided that publication should not take place until after his death'.Forster's novel details the process by which a typical Cambridge educated public school-boy comes to the realisation that he is homosexual. The novel culminates with a love affair which causes the titular character to reject his entire inherited system of values and conduct.Began in 1913 and completed in 1914, the work remained unpublished until after Forster's death, as he was concerned that the book would be liable for prosecution. With the inscription of Antonini, Petersfield 1971, to the half title.
