First edition, first printing. Published by Cape in London, 1988. This is a fine copy. The signature of Blake flat-signed to the front endpaper shows above that of Dahl's to a personal bookplate beneath. The dust wrapper, illustrated by Quentin Blake is fine, save for a small nick to the head of the spine and has been neatly price clipped. The boards are free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are immaculate. Overall, this is a fine copy. In 2003, Matilda was listed at number 74 in The Big Read, a BBC survey of the British public of the top 200 novels of all time. In 2012, Matilda was ranked number 30 among all-time best children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a US monthly. Time magazine named Matilda in its list of the 100 Best Young-Adult Books of All Time. In 2012, Matilda Wormwood appeared on a Royal Mail commemorative postage stamp.

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title, "To Donn, Love, Roald Dahl, 1988". Matilda won the Children's Book Award in 1989. It formed the basis for both the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and the successful stage musical which premiered at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010. A film adaptation of the musical was released in December 2022. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt. With supplied dust jacket. With numerous in-text and full-page illustrations by Quentin Blake.
