Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. In this classic study, Reich provides unique insight into the phenomenon of fascism, which continues to ravage the international community in ways great and small. Drawing on his medical experiences with men and women of various classes, races, nations, and religious beliefs, Reich refute…s the still generally self notion that fascism is a specific characteristic of certain nationalities or a political party of ideology that is imposed on innocent people by means of force or political maneuvers. "Fascism is only the organised political expression of the structure of the average man's character. It is basic emotional attitude of the suppressed man of our authoritarian machine civilization and its mechanistic-mystical conception of life." Responsibility for the elimination of fascism thus rests with the masses of average people who might otherwise support and champion it.

Originally published in 1933 as Die Massenpsychologie des Faschismus, the book was quickly dispelled by the Nazi regime and eventually burned; Reich soon left the country (because of its critique of the communist regime in the Sovie…t Union, he was kicked out of he Communist Party of Germany also) travelling through Austria and Scandinavia and eventually settling in the United States, where after years of teaching and controversial lab work, ran into trouble with the law and the FBI (despite his initial arrest being proved to be a case of mistaken identity). He passed away in 1957 at the age of 60 at the Federal Correctional Institution, Lewisburg. Reich interprets fascism as a mass psychological phenomenon rooted in sexual repression. His central thesis is that authoritarian politics draw their emotional force from societies in which sexual expression is tightly controlled, producing individuals predisposed to submission, moral rigidity, and identification with authority. First published in English in the US in 1946 (translation based on the third, enlarged edition from August 1942). This edition was based on a new translation from the revised German manuscript by Reich's Trustee and kind of intellectual heir, Mary Boyd. However, the book was never published in the UK. Reich was an Austrian-born Marxist who had linked fascism with sexual repression, Dr. Reich had the rare distinction of having his writings ordered destroyed by both the Nazis in Germany in the 1930s and the United States government in the 1950s, during the McCarthy era, having been published in 1946 by the Orgone Institute Press. This book - and all of Reich's published books - were later ordered to be burned on the request of the Food and Drug Administration by a judge in Maine, United States in 1954. Uncommon. Publisher's purple cloth boards, unclipped dust jacket. BOOK: Boards square and unmarked, some foxing to the top edge, internally tight and clean. DJ: Unclipped jacket a little rubbed throughout with some creasing to extremities. The Souvenir Press published a number of Reich's works uniformly in 1972 in its Condor Books series, some having been translated for the first time.
