This work, written during the years of the German crisis 1930-33 and subsequently banned by the Nazis, is a unique contribution on the understanding of one of the crucial phenomena of our times - Fascism. In it, Reich applies his clinical knowledge of human character structure to the social and apolitical scene. He firmly repudiates the concept that Fascism is the ideology or action of a single individual or nationality, or of any ethnic or political group. He also denies a purely socio-economic explanation as advanced by Marxian ideologists. He understands Fascism as the expression of the irrational character structure of the average human being whose primary, biological needs and impulses have been suppressed for thousands of years. The social function of this suppression and the crucial role played in it by the authoritarian family and the church and are carefully analysed. Reich shows how every form of organized mysticism, including Fascism, relies on the unsatisfactory orgiastic longing of the masses. **The importance of this work today cannot be underestimated. The human character structure that created or organized fascist movements still exists, dominating our present social conflicts. If the chaotic agony of our times is ever to be eliminated, we must turn our attention to the character structure that creates it. We must understand the mass psychology of Fascism.' (Quote taken from the front flap). ***First British edition - hard to find now in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging.

Hardcover. Condition: VG-. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First English Language Edition. Even more frighteningly relevant today than when the author originally wrote it to explain the Nazi's rise to power in Germany leading up to WWII. The famed psychoanalyst, who originated "orgone theory," here explores how the economic & ideological structure of a society can converge, fueled by nationalism & racism, & sexual suppression, to create a climate where fascism can flourish, especially when fueled by a charismatic leader. And as Reich was a Freudian & early sexologist, he also offers a fascinating analysis of the sexual symbolism of the swastika. 344 pp. Orig. published in German in 1933 & in a second edition the very next year, this is the First English-laguage Edition from 1946, translated from the manuscript of the revised & enlarged third edition. Newspaper clipping dated 1982 laid in discussing the resurgence of book banning & burning in the US, including the works of this author. A significant work for any era & essential reading for our own. Hardcover 8vo has matte black cloth-covered boards stamped with bright gilt lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG- (minus)/Good+, downgraded solely due to very heavy underlining by former owner, which really only impacts the Preface, with scattered lighter underlining in first 5 pages; also, some writing to ffep, name stamp to bottom outside page edges. Else, very clean, pages moderately tanned, heavier to edges. Text block strong, hinges secure, but gutter between pages 8-9 is cracked. About 50 pages have mild chipping/tearing to lower edge & the top outer-upper corners of some pages in the 40s-50s show rough edges/tearing/scraping (see photos). The unclipped DJ (with orig. $4.50 price intact) is VG: bright & colorful with minor chips & light soil, some writing to front flap; nicely protected in new mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.

First American edition. First American edition. (Correct first in the English language as well.) Signed by Wilhelm Reich on the front free endpaper and inscribed to his second wife, "To Ilse Ollendorff, with my heartfelt thank [sic] for all her help Aug. 1946 Wilhelm Reich." xxiv, 344 pp. Bound in publisher's navy cloth with gilt lettering. Very Good+ with light edge wear; staining to rear board. Spine slightly mottled; contents lightly toned. In a Near Fine unclipped supplied jacket with light toning, small tear to rear joint at foot, and rubbing to rear panel. One of the renegade Freudian psychologist's most influential works, which posits sexual repression as the genesis of authoritarianism. A terrific association copy inscribed to his second wife (a partner in his highly unorthodox research in the US during the 1940s and early 1950s, and mother to his son) whom he would marry that year. They would stay together until 1951, when Reich discovered DOR and began constructing his famous cloudbusters. Signed copies of Reich's books are quite uncommon in the market.
