Der Einband ist leicht berieben, die Seiten sind papierbedingt nachgedunkelt, ansonsten ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. -- (Au…szug:) Erstes Kapitel. Sein Antlitz war eine polierte Maske, die vermutlich aus der Königlichen Militär-Akademie stammte. Hinter dieser fast reg- losen Maske sickerte eine Stimme hervor. Die Worte schienen niederzutröpfeln und dann langsam hochzusteigen wie ölige Bla- sen durch die Wasser eines Aquariums. Das Zimmer hatte weiß Gott etwas von einem Aquarium an sich, obgleich es ein öder, staubiger, hoher und häßlicher Raum war, in einem Haus, das, seinen ehedem menschlich-gemüt- lichen Zwecken entfremdet, jetzt unpersönlichen Unterredungen und der anonymen Tätigkeit, die hinter diesen Unterredungen pulsierte, überantwortet war. Die Doppelfenster waren geschlos- sen und verriegelt gegen das gedämpfte Brausen des Londoner Straßenlärms und den Rauchgeruch der Londoner Luft. Er lehnte sich zurück, so daß sein Sessel auf den Hinterbeinen stand; seine kleinen grauen Augen wanderten kühl über die Stuckornamente, die um die Decke liefen, wo jetzt die Spinnen, von keinem Federbesen mehr bedroht, sich begatteten und be- kämpften und ihre kunstvollen Netze woben [.].
