Half-title page blurb: When Nicostratus was only two he and his mother, the beautiful Helen of Sparta, were carried off from Greece by Prince Paris of Troy. Ten years later, when this story begins, the long, weary, bitter siege of Troy is drawing to a close, and Nico, brought up in Troy but nourished on stories of Greece, hardly knows which side he belongs to. But he discovered that the Greek hero Achilles has secretly entered Troy to ask for the hand of Polyxena the Trojan Princess, and that Paris is planning to betray him. He cannot save Achilles, but from then onwards he swears he will help the Greek army to capture Troy. In the Trojan temple is a little, black stone statue of Paris Athena, and the legend runs that the city which held it could never be conquered: this is the Luck of Troy, and Nico, too young to fight in this war of heroes, can help Odysseus by smuggling the image out of Troy.
