Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Green cloth on boards, with giilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship motif to front board. Spine is fading. Moderate bumping to extremities. Previous owner's ink stamp 'coat of arms' on front end paper. Clean and tidy throughout. First UK edition of the 1947 original edition by Robert Cushman Murphy of the American Museum of Natural History. As a young and newly married graduate, the author embarked upon a 12 month voyage on the Whaling Brig Daisy, and this book takes the form of a 'log' he kept for the benefit of his new wife, detailing his adventures on the whaler. At the same time he used the voyage to compile a different form of 'log' detailing the wildlife, and particularly oceanic birds that he observed, which he later turned into books and articles for the scientific community. This book shows the 'personal' aspects of his voyage and illustrates life on a whaler at the early stages of the 20th Century.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Stated First printing of the First Edition of 1947. The book is bound in teal color cloth with illustration of the whaling brig "Daisy" in black on the front cover. There is light soiling on the covers. Corners have a touch of rubbing wear and spine caps are softened. Inscribed by the author to his friend Eric Gugler on the first free endpaper. Otherwise, pages are clean, smooth and unmarked. This was his personal log modeled, he said, after the journal of "youthful Darwin", and written for his young bride while he was on a year long voyage to the edge of Antarctica . The trip, on a whaling and sealing brig out of New Bedford, was funded by the Museum of Natural History, New York, and Murphy kept a separated scientific log of specimens he collected for research. He would go on to become Lamont Curator of Birds at the museum and author the classic work-' Birds of South America'. The cover illustration of the Daisy was reproduced from a painting by American artist and knot expert Clifford Ashley, also a personal friend of the author, as noted in the preface. 290 pages. Inscribed by Author(s).
