Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited 629/1,800. William Cobbett (1763 - 1835) was an English pamphleteer, journalist, politician, and farmer. He was one of an agrarian faction seeking to reform Parliament, abolish "rotten boroughs", restrain foreign activity, and raise wages, with the goal of easing poverty among farm laborers and small land holders. He backed lower taxes, saving, reversing commons enclosures and returning to the gold standard. He opposed borough-mongers, sinecurists, bureaucratic "tax-eaters" and stockbrokers. His radicalism furthered the Reform Act 1832 and gained him one of two newly created seats in Parliament for the borough of Oldham. His polemics range from political reform to religion, including Catholic emancipation. His best known book is Rural Rides (1830, in print). He argued against Malthusianism, saying economic betterment could support global population growth. This copy is near fine with a brown cloth spine on marbled paper-covered boards and gilt titles on the spine. Minor edge wear and slight bumping at the spine ends are the only issues. No other marks or damage. Some pages still uncut.

This is a selection of writings by pro-democracy English-American pamphleteer and journalist William Cobbett (1763-1835), who wrote under the nom de plume "Peter Porcupine." As noted in the prospectus, "though passages from the works now presented have been used by his biographers, there has been hitherto no attempt such as this to let Cobbett speak, and speak at length, for himself. . . . The genetic history of his opinions has its own importance and interest; but the general reader will probably take more pleasure in the lively picture of himself which is presented incidentally by this most personal and self-revealing of controversialists." The introduction provided here by G. D. H. Cole is his first association with Nonesuch in a professional context, though he had been made familiar to Francis Meynell through academic and society ties.
