Bleistift-Anm. im T., etw. fingerfleckig. - Bühler (1837 - 1898), studierte in Göttingen klassische, deutsche und orientalische Philologie und war seit 1861 als Assistent an der Privatbibliothek der Königin von England sowie an der Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen tätig. 1863 ging er als Prof. der orientalischen Sprachen an das Elphinstone College in Bombay, an dem er später auch Geschichte lehrte. B. wurde 1868 Schulinspektor der Provinz Gujerat, sammelte und erforschte im Auftrag der Regierung Handschriften, gründete mit F. Kielhorn 1868 die "Bombay Sanskrit Series" und erwarb zahlreiche Handschriften für westliche Bibliotheken. 1880 nach Europa zurückgekehrt, folgte er einem Ruf an die Univ. Wien und gründete dort das Orientalische Institut sowie die Indogermanische Gesellschaft. B. war Mitbegründer der "Zeitschrift für die Kunde des Morgenlandes" und des "Grundrisses der indo-arischen Philologie und Altertumskunde"; er veröffentlichte u.a. Indische Paläographie von circa 350 a.Chr. -- circa 1350 p.Chr. (1896). (DBE).
