The LCR workshop is a bi annual gathering of computer scientists who develop software systems for parallel and distributed computers, held in the off year for the ACM Symposium on the Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP). This fth meeting was held in cooperation with ACM SIGPLAN on the University ofRochester campus. A totalof38six pageabstracts were submitted,ofwhich22 were chosen for presentation and publication. Each paper received a minimum of 3 reviews, with 122 reviews in total. There were 44 registered attendees. Local arrangements were coordinatedbyKristenWondrack,alongwithSara Sadick and Mary Albee, from the University of Rochester conference and events of ce, and JoMarie Carpenter from the University of Rochester department of computer science. Grigorios Magklis was the webmaster for the workshop. I would like to thank all of them for an excellent job, and in particular, Kristen Wondrack, for helping ensure an enjoyable workshop that also proceeded smoothly. I hope the participants were able to take advantage of some of the attractions in Upstate New York as well.

The LCR workshop is a bi-annual gathering of computer scientists who develop software systems for parallel and distributed computers. LCR is held in alternating years with the ACM Symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP) and draws from the same community. This fourth meeting was held in cooperation with ACM SIGPLAN on the c- pus of Carnegie Mellon University, May 28{30, 1998. There were 60 registered attendees from 9 nations. A total of 47 6-page extended abstracts were s- mitted. There were a total of 134 reviews for an average of 2.85 reviews per submission. Submissions were rank ordered by average review score. The top 23 submissions were selected as full papers and the next 9 as short papers. Starting with new developments in classical problems of parallel compiler design, such as dependence analysis and an exploration of loop parallelism, the book goes on to address the issues of compiler strategy for specific architectures and programming environments. Several chapters investigate support for multi-threading, object orientation, irregular computation, locality enhancement, and communication optimization. Issues of the interface between language and operating system support are also discussed. Finally, the load balance issues are discussed in different contexts, including sparse matrix computation and iteratively balanced adaptive solvers for partial differential equations. Some additional topics are also discussed in the extended abstracts. Each chapter provides a bibliography of relevant papers and the book can thus be used as a reference to the most up-to-date research in parallel software engineering.
