From the Land of the Scythians will include a selection of 180 of the most beautiful objects of the Urartian, Altaic, Scythian and Sarmatian cultures, ranging in date from the third millennium B.C. to the first century B.C. The primary emphasis will be on the Scythian artifacts which consist mostly of luxurious gold objects of personal adornment and of weapons made with surpassing craftsmanship and artistry for the Scythian kings and princes by Greek and other foreign artisans as well as native craftsmen. These are objects.from the culture of the early nomads living in the Altai mountains of Kazakhstan. These Altai graves are twenty~five centuries old, but because the mounds that marked them were made of boulders, not of earth, water penetrated them and turned to ice that never melted even in summer in the high altitude. Thus, the objects found in these icy graves were in as perfect condition as the day they were buried and their discovery was a revelation to historians and scientists. The most important source of information, indeed almost the only source the Western World has had of these ancient nomadic peoples, is the description of the Scythians written in the fifth century, B.C. by the Greek historian Herodotus in Book Four of his history of the Persian Wars. His observations of the exotic, bizarre way of life of those royal nomads seemed so incredible that for centuries the report was regarded as probably fictional.
