Novelist and conversationalist Edith Olivier (1872-1948), great friend of Rex Whistler and Stephen Tennant and Siegfriend Sassoon and his circle, inscribes a volume of her memoirs, "Siegfried & Hester, welcoming you home, Edith Oliver May 1938". In her Journal, for 29 May 1938 she wrote: "dined with Siegfreid and Hester who opened a fizzy bottle of pink champagne to drink Walkley's health " The year before, Sassoon had settled an allowance of £200 annually. In April 1938 the Sassoons went abroad "to Rapallo for four 'elysian' weeks when Beerbohm checked The Old Century's punctuation" (Egremont, p. 368. Edith Olivier, from Her Journals, ed.
