Published by The Manor House Press, Byfleet, Surrey in 1964, this is the first hardback printing of Ronald A Lee's The Knibb Family Clockmakers. Coming in a Limited Edition of 1000, this is number 287, signed by the author to the frontispiece and is extremely rare. Blue, red and gilt cloth binding the book is in very good condition and contains the original subscribers pamphlet at the front of the book. The dust jacket is very good with some minor edge and corner creasing and two small tears to the front jacket (approx 12mm in length) to the top left hand corner and centre bottom. There are also two very small tears to the rear bottom. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 2529

Joseph Knibb is renowned for both the quality of his work and his invention. The aesthetic beauty and simplicity of his work is unparalleled. Among his many inventions was the system of Roman striking,[5] the tic-tac escapement, and probably the anchor escapement.[citation needed] His merits were recognised by his being appointed clockmaker to Charles II and then to James II. Clock cases of Knibb's era were wooden, and therefore were made by specialist clockcase makers who were members of the Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers.[6] The politician Richard Legh (1635?87) wrote to his wife describing Knibb's advice on choosing a case for a longcase clock: 0 g.
