JW consignment. Shelved above HC Fiction. James Dover Grant, born October 29, 1954 in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Though he studied law in undergraduate, he never intended to enter the field, spending much time backstage working on theater productions, going into commercial television after graduating. Grant would work for Granada Television as a presentation director from 1977 - 1995, being involved in over 40,000 hours of programming from commercials to shows such as "The Jewel in the Crown" and "Prime Suspect". Corporate restructuring would lead to Grant losing his job, in reaction to which he began writing his first novel "Killing Floor", after which he moved to the US where he lives today with his family. The pen name Lee Child would come out of Grant's mispronunciation of Renault's Le Car, the naming convention becoming a family joke. The name would also conveniently place him between crime fiction heavy hitters Raymond Chandler and Agatha Christie on bookshelves. The name for Jack Reacher came about as Grant was at the grocery store, noting that due to his height people frequently asked him to reach for items "I though Reacher a good name.". "Killing Floor" would become the first novel in his famous Jack Reacher series, releasing in 1997 to highly positive reviews winning the Anthony Award in 1997 and the 1998 Barry Award for Best First Novel. It is on the anniversary of losing his job at Granada Television that he begins work on the next entry in the series, which to date has numbered 28 novels, and a short story collection with more novels set to release in the coming years. The novels follow the eponymous Jack Reacher, an ex-military policeman who has since become a drifter, roaming the US, taking odd jobs and investigating dangerous and mysterious events, many of which become personal as friends and loved ones become involved. The series has spawned 2 films, releasing in 2012 and 2016, and starring Tom Cruise. The first film released to generally positive reviews and was commercially successful, the sequel receiving much more mixed reviews and enjoying only middling financial success. It has also spawned a television series titled "Reacher" and starring Alan Ritchson, the first season premiering on Amazon Prime streaming in 2022 and enjoying generally positive reviews since, the second season premiering in 2024 with a third in production. 1384734.
