First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For my friend Sir Wilmott Lewis Best regards Charles G. Dawes, June 24th 1940". Lewis (1877-1950) served as the Washington correspondent for The Times of London for almost three decades following his appointment in 1920. "In his office, in the Press Club, at scores of Washington dinner tables, he became a great social figure and this served him well in his professional work. He was soon a master of the complicated social and political life of Washington, especially well informed about the inner life of the senate, and he was recognized as a figure whom it was well worth informing and even consulting. With this direct and indirect influence, his Times obituary was right to say that 'Few men have done more for Anglo-American relations'" (ODNB). Dawes served as US ambassador to Great Britain from 1929 to 1931. His Journal covers this period, one of Depression for both countries and monetary crisis for Britain, including the negotiations for the London Naval Conference and the deliberations over the Manchurian Crisis. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With frontispiece and half-tone illustrations after photographs throughout. Slight toning to endpapers and spotting to edges; a very good copy.
