First Edition
First edition. 29 x 19cm. Blue cloth portfolio with vignettes and titles in white to the upper board, with patterned paper internally. Containing 100 fine collotype photographs, loose as issued, of Java and Sumatra by Jean Demmeni. Lacking the 23pp. introductory booklet (as usual). The cloth portfolio with three clear paper-tape repairs to the folds, two 2cm tears to the head of the spine joints, and some scattered marking. The photographs with the occasional minor mark or spot of foxing to the blank margins are otherwise in very good order, remaining clean and sharp. Jean Demmeni, a photographer for the Topographical Service in the Dutch East Indies, was dispatched for six months to photographically document Java and Sumatra, the present work forming the culmination of his labours. The fine plates included here depict "the most beautiful natural scenes and everything else in colonial society that can be considered outstanding", ranging from the natural history and architecture of the islands, to depictions of the everyday lives, dress, customs, and occupations of their inhabitants.
