Mystery novel set in New York's Tenderloin district in the early 1900s. An early entry in the "Crime Club" series, it's Nehr's "Doubleday Crime Club Compendium" as a "fictionalized true crime," although no more specific information is offered. The original blurb for the book describes the basic situation: "'Belle' Villiers, reputed to be a famous politician's mistress, was found strangled on a park bench [in Washington Square]. She rose from the slums to a position of great wealth. . This story of the House of Two Green Eyes (the old Tenderloin Police Station) is founded on fact. Written by an experienced police reporter, it tells a baffling, breathless murder story, and reconstructs the old Tenderloin district in all its excitement and raw fascination." Although none of the contemporary reviews of the book I found gave any clues about what real-life murder might have inspired the story, one reviewer added this observation: "In the course of history Mr. Chalmers paints a colorful picture of the Tenderloin and also describes quite fully the methods by which criminal news is gathered by metropolitan newspapers." The book's protagonist is a young newspaper reporter -- presumably a stand-in for the Scottish-born author (1880-1935), who first came to the U.S. in 1904, worked on various New York papers (and later did a stint as city editor of the World), and wrote a ton of magazine fiction. Originally published in 1928 (the first year of The Crime Club), this copy bears a 1929 date on the title page.…
