Item Description: 1st.ed., 1985. 222 pp., 31 photo-plates + 2 maps. D.j. 22 x 14cm. Spine of d.j. discoloured o/w FINE. The wartime career of a celebrated 6-inch-gun cruiser, HMS PENELOPE, dubbed Pepperpot by her crew. She won fame during the war but began the conflict with a series of mishaps including going aground in the Vestfjord during the Norwegian campaign while searching for enemy shipping and came close to being lost. After a refit she redeemed herself and fought hard in the Mediterranean winning seven Battle Honours. She was involved in the destruction of 23 enemy vessels and numerous aircraft. In one 15-day period in 1942 while at Malta, PENELOPE survived 2,000 sorties by Axis bombers dropping 3,000 tons of bombs and 14 aerial torpedoes. Always in the thick of action the cruiser was finally sunk by a U-boat in 1944 with the loss of 417 officers and ratings _ with 206 of her crew being picked up. A SCARCE and sought-after title.
