Contemporary full diamond patterned leather boards with stamped gilt decorative border, tan leather spine with 6 faux bands, stamped gilt lettering and decorations there, marbled endpapers, approximately 7x9 1/2 inches, index, vi + 608 pp, illustrated with exceptionally well done plates by H (Henry) Gastineau and various engravers, (all present, but 3 adjoin different pages than noted in the list on illustrations, the correct locations having been noted in pencil). Hardcover, fair to good. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, rubbed along edges, some shelf scuffing, a 3/4 x 1 inch piece of leather chipped off spine, an adjoining piece of the same size just barely attached, a 1 1/2 inch tear at top edges of both joints, 1/2 inch deep x 1 inch long chip off head of spine. Internally, front hinge completely cracked and open, rear hinge cracked but holding, additional hinge cracks between of the gatherings, previous owner's signature (Rev E R Lewis, Pittston, PA) , approximately 1x2x2 inch water(? ) stain on upper corners of first few leaves, relatively minor tanning on leaves adjoining plates, some rather rare, stray spots of foxing and smudges in text, a half dozen or so dogears, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked, quite worthy of some restoration! Includes several b/w engravings, incl. a frontis. vi+608pp. Rebound (probably early twentieth century) in Half-bound in green leather with machine tooled decorated remainder of boards. End papers and all page edges marbled. Boards now protected by removable plastic clear DJ. Light shelf-wear to boards. Original leather spine has been laid down on the new leather and is green with gilt lettering and decoration. Several pages show foxing and one or two show water-staining.
