Spine gilt-blocked with raised bands, which are now somewhat rubbed along with endbands and joints. Corners bumped, with front hinge cracked but holding. Top edge gilt, with marbled endpapers. Text block remains tight. Preliminary and final leaves foxed, with the interior remaining notably bright and clean. A strong and internally well-preserved example. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. This is a 4to-size illustrated edition in 5 bound volumes; pagination: 576 p., 574 p., and 564 p., 570 p.,and 598 p. Featuring full page illustrations on wood by Alphonse de Neuville: 75 for volume 1, 66 for volume 2, 74 for volume 3, 94 for volume 4, and 85 for volume 5. In addition, each volume features many text cuts. The books are bound with black leather spines and corner tips over blue cloth covers. What was once a very handsome edition, we find that the leather spines are deteriorated and worn, and the corner tips are also worn. There are occasional marks to the corner tips as well. The covers are detched from the spine in three of the volumes. There is also some occasional staining to a few covers; the text is still tight and there are no loose signatures. There is some occasional spotting to the contents, primarily in the first and last few pages. Given the condition, this is obviously a candidate for rebinding or rebacking. Je sais avec quelle fermeté d'esprit vous jugez les situations sociales. Je ne craindrai jamais de voir mon nom revenir souvent sous votre plume. Je ne connais rien de plus agréable que d'être compris. Recevez, je vous prie [. ]". François Guizot évoque ici la brochure d'Auguste Séguier, intitulée : "Monsieur Guizot et la Révolution de Juillet", qui paraîtra dans le courant de l'année 1839. Superbe exemplaire, dans le premier tirage des nombreuses illustrations par Alphonse de Neuville, Philippoteaux, Emile Bayard, Sahib, etc., provenant de la bibliothèque du dramaturge, directeur de théâtre et bibliophile Paul Gavault (avec son ex-libris, infimes usures et frott. en reliure et coupes, parfait état par ailleurs). Qualche usuale fioritura, ma bellissimo esemplare. Ex-libris nobiliari "Henley". Amplissima storia di Francia destinata alla gioventù; in essa il grande storico francese compendiò la narrazione della sua "Histoire de la civilisation de Framce". Il quinto vol. è redatto dalla figlia di Guizot, Madame Guizot De Witt, in base ad appunti lasciati da suo padre. Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot (Nimes, 1787-Val Richer, Lisieux, Calvados, 1874), tra i masssimi storici e statisti francesi del secolo XIX, fu autore di molte celebri opere sulle rivoluzioni di Francia e Inghilterra. In politica fu sempre un monarchico costituzionale, arroccato su posizioni non lontane da quelle del suo amico Royer Collard. Ricoprì il Ministero dell'Istruzione sotto Luigi Filippo, introducendo un nuovo sistema per l'educazione primaria, e, nel 1847, la carica di Primo Ministro.
