The trek was sponsored for scientific purposes by the World Book Encyclopedia.It was the Abominable Snowman aspect of the Expedition wthat grabbed the notoriet , but it's scientific purpose was to carry out physiological research into high altitude acclimatization, the culmination of which would be an ascent of 27,790 foot Mt. Makalu, without the aid of oxygen. The assault on Makalu, had to be abandoned after almost reaching the top. Months of living at 19,000 feet and above was hoped to acclimatize the climbers for Makalu without oxygen-but it was proved that the lengthy that period of adjustment created its own problems. Desmond Doig was an English journalist based in Calcutta. He wrote extensively on the sub-continent.
