Mannering, the Astrologer, is the second of the Waverley novels by Scott, published anonymously in 1815. According to an introduction that Scott wrote in 1829, he had originally intended to write a story of the supernatural, but changed his mind soon after starting. The book was a huge success, the first edition selling out on the first day of publication. 495 pp. Book.

Covers shelfworn, rubbed, paper peeling, missing paper on front and back, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, contemporary ink number and stamped name (Isaac Watts Hybbard) on endpapers, faint pencil on endpaper and last page, title page lacks small piece at bottom, one page with 1.25" edge tear, faint staining in margins, a few pages have short edge tears, foxed throughout. Overall good and textblock is tight. Isaac Watts Hubbard, 1794-1871 and known as "Watts" operated a distillery in Windsor, Vermont. Very SCARCE title, even in one volume of the FIRST AMERICAN EDITION.

Hardcovers with black leather spines and corners and dark grey cloth boards, and gilt titles within separate red and black frames on spines of each volume. There is rubbing of leather but only minor wear to cloth boards; slightly loose internal spine hinge on Guy Mannering. Some spotting and browning of early pages but generally clean interiors; each volume has frontispiece and vignette on title page. An incomplete set of 8 Waverley novels published in 1852 and in good to very good condition.

In three volumes. [4], 226; [4], 229, [1]; [4], 235pp, [1]. Contemporary calf, tooled in gilt and blind, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. Lightly rubbed. Paper slips pasted to all FEPs seemingly to obscure earlier bookplates, foxed. A Parisian edition of Sir Walter Scott's (1771-1832) historical novel centred on a kidnapped heir returning to his stolen lands; the second title in the Waverley Novels series.
