Condition: new. (Paperback, 2019). 2019 1st edition paperback issue. 8vo paperback (150 x 214mm). Ppxviii,478. Colour photographs, distribution maps, charts, bibliography. Fine new paperback. "The gull is a familiar sight by the seaside, and one of the most recognisable bird species, but most people know surprisingly little about the lives and habits of these seafaring birds. John C. Coulson remedies this with a comprehensive overview of the gull." "There are more than 50 known species of gulls, and many of these are well-adapted to living in urban areas and in close proximity to humans. But there are also less familiar species to discover, which keep their distance from beachgoers. This long-overdue addition to the New Naturalist library explains the thorny issues of gull taxonomy and classification, then introduces readers to what it means to be a gull, physically and genetically. Chapters are divided by larger gull groups, and within these, distribution, lifecyles and behaviours are examined, as well as acclimation to the human world. Colour photography throughout offers ample opportunity to get a sense of the variation within the gull group, and makes this book a pleasure to look through." PREVIOUS PRICE £35.00.

First edition, 1953. Hardback. xvi, 255pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. One of the most brilliant volumes in the whole New Naturalist series, Dr Tinbergen's investigation of the life history and habits of the herring gull is already established as a classic work of modern animal behaviour studies. A charmingly written and exciting monograph, it tells us about the mind of a gull established on practically all the coasts of the northern half of the world; but it tells us also more than a little about the workings of our own minds. Illustrated with 51 photographs taken by the author together with 58 drawings and diagrams. Jacket design by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. Book in very good condition. A little dust soiling and some spotting to text block edges. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. A little light edge wear and a couple of nicks around the extremities of the spine. Small chip to lower edge of back. Spine a little discoloured. Some light discolouration and a little spotting generally to jacket. Book.
