Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1857 1st edition. 504pp + 12pp catalogue to front and rear. Fair/None. Blue decorative cloth boards with some rubbing/bumping to edges/spine, minor loss to spine ends, some scuffing, splitting to spine edges. Contents generally clean and tight but for minor soiling/browning, occasional splitting to gutters, occasional pencil notes to text, minor creasing, ink notations to reverse of title page. Beautiful B&W and hand-coloured engravings throughout. A look at the amazing collection of art and antiquities owned by Ralph Bernal (1783-1850). Bernal was one of the most eminent collectors of his age, but his huge wealth which allowed him to amass such treasures was financed by the Slave Trade. Following the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 and the Slave Compensation Act of 1837, he was paid the equivalent of £1.37 million in today's money, to compensate him for the loss of his slaves. His collection included armour and arms, furniture, porcelain, glassware, jewellery, paintings, silver, and lots more. The collection was dispersed by Christies in 1855, during a mammoth auction of over 4000 items, lasting days. This book contains beautiful images of some of the most prized pieces.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the artistic and cultural impact of Ralph Bernal, a prominent Victorian collector. With the dawn of the 19th century came an intrigue with medieval design and neo -Gothic ornamentation that Bernal embraced with gusto. The author celebrates Bernal's contributions to contemporary taste during an era of profound societal and technological transformation. Through an eclectic and wide -ranging collection, Bernal pushed the boundaries of artistic appreciation and helped shape the aesthetics of his time. While chronicling Bernal's personal journey as a tastemaker, the author invites reflection on the dynamic interplay between collecting and cultural exchange, highlighting the ongoing influence of historical artifacts on art and design to this day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Bohn was a renowned publisher who appreciated porcelains and antiques. That sale provoked an exhibition of some of the art works sold by Bernal, with supplemental contributions by others, including Bohn. Additional Notes have been supplied by Mr. Thomas Woods of Christie's, and Mr. Burn. Bohn considered the Appendix of Monograms the "great feature of the volume". Much of the Ralph Bernal Collections also comprised of Armour and Arms.
