First Edition
FIRST EDITION. Half title, plates, 5pp index. Orig. blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; a little faded. A nice copy. A critical review of the 'MoberlyJourdain incident', wherein the author debunks the sensational story of two women's claims of seeing ghosts during a trip to the Palace of Versailles in 1901. The Adventure (1911), published under the pseudonyms Elizabeth Morison and Frances Lamont, recounts their experiences on a trip to the palace gardens, and sighting the ghost of Mary Antoinette amongst other ghoulish and supernatural apparitions. A thorough piece of research into the case.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An excellent copy of the first edition of Lucille Iremonger's classic critique of the 1901 Versailles 'time slip' adventure. This is the true first edition, first printing. Pages are excellent: no markings or inscriptions, just some normal minor age wear mostly on top edges. One fox spot on fore edge but no tanning or browning elsewhere. Very unusual in this condition. DJ is very nice: unclipped, some shelf wear and minor nickings and the odd small enclosed tear. Some age wear. But generally very good indeed. A great collector's item. Many illustrations. See photos all of which are of the copy for sale, we don't use stock photos.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. IREMONGER, Lucille. The Ghosts of Versailles. Miss Moberly and Miss Jourdain and Their Adventure: A Critical Study. London: Faber and Faber, 1957. First edition. A study about two Oxford academics, Charlotte Moberly (1846-1937) and Eleanor Jourdain (1863-1924), and their book An Adventure (1911), their account of how on a visit together to Versailles in 1901 they both experienced the landscape and buildings as they had been in late 18th-century and encountered the ghosts of Marie Antoinette and members of her court. The book created a sensation, and it remained in print for most of the 20th century, attracting a number of critical works, including the present book, which promises to be 'as gripping as a detective story'. A former student of Moberly and Jourdain at St Hugh's, Iremonger takes a skeptical view of the incident, revealing that the two women were lesbian lovers, and the incident was a follie a deux. First edition. 313 pp; b/w photos. 8vo, original cloth; partial browning to endpapers. Very good in dust jacket (slight edge-wear; not price-clipped). A very attractive copy.
