Es ist die Zeit, in der von der Gabelentz' Hauptwerk entstand, die Chinesische Grammatik, mit Ausschluss des niederen Stils und der heutigen Umgangssprache, Leipzig 1881. Von der bleibenden Bedeutung dieses Werks zeugt, dass es über siebzig Jahre nach dem ersten Erscheinen mehrere unveränderte Nachdrucke erlebte. Anhand des Briefwechsels kann man an der Entstehung dieses Werkes gleichsam teilhaben. Das Gleiche gilt für Uhles Dissertation Die Partikel wêi im Schu-king und Schi-king. Ein Beitrag zur Grammatik des vorklassischen Chinesisch, Leipzig 1880.Der Briefwechsel gibt einen Einblick in das Leipziger Universitätsleben der betreffenden Jahre. Er beleuchtet auch die Bemühungen des Lehrers, für seinen Schüler eine Anstellung zu finden. Diese Bemühungen führten letztlich nicht zum Erfolg. Uhle blieb nicht bei der Sinologie, sondern verlegte sich auf die Ethnografie und Archäologie. Für 1892-95 plante er eine Forschungsreise nach Südamerika. Schließlich wurde ein Aufenthalt von über vierzig Jahren daraus, währenddessen sich Uhle in der Archäologie Verdienste erwarb und als "Begründer der Andenarchäologie" berühmt wurde. Und nicht zuletzt gewährt der Briefwechsel einen Einblick in die Persönlichkeit dieser beiden großen Gelehrten.
