Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Inscribed copy of an early printing of this foundational work in post World War II economics by the Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Samuelson. Warmly inscribed by Paul Samuelson on the title page to economist Rama V. Ramachandran. Ramachandran was a senior administrator at the Japan-U.S. Center in the Stern School of Business at New York University, which was among the academic institutions where Samuelson lectured as a visiting professor. The inscription reads: "For admired friend Rama, Paul Samuelson, NYU, November 2004." The date places the signing near the end of Samuelson's nearly two-decade association with the Stern School and the center. Cloth, 447 pages. Fourth Printing (1955). No dust jacket. The original dye on the cloth has faded in multiple patches on both cover creating a mottled appearance. Has bumped corners on the covers and some tanning of the page edges. Ramachandran's name is inked at the top of the title page (with a 1958 date, suggesting that he first acquired the copy in graduate school.). Signed by Author(s).

Second printing of the original 1947 edition. xii, 447pp. Cloth at head of spine creased, signature on front free endpaper, else fine in a very good dust jacket with small chips at corners and spine ends, mild toning. Overall, a handsome copy. Although often mistakenly referred to as the "Second Edition," the 1948 offered here is not a textual second edition (i.e., there are no changes to the text save for the 1948 date on the title page, and the words "Second Printing" on both the copyright page and the front flap of the dust jacket). This highly influential book, which was based on Samuelson's doctoral thesis, "provided a toolbox of techniques that were to become standard in postwar economics. In particular, it established the importance of deriving comparative statics resultswhat happens to an equilibrium when something changesand provided methods for doing this. A recurring theme in the book was the need for economic theories to be 'operational'to have testable implications" (ANB). Provenance: On the front free endpaper is the prior owner name R.W. Oliver, most likely Robert W. Oliver (1922-1998), who earned his PhD in economics at Princeton in 1957, was a Professor of Economics at Caltech from 1959-1988,and worked as an economist at the World Bank.

First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "This book was written for economists like Roman Weil, Paul A. Samuelson, AB Chicago '35. MIT, June 2001". Weil (1940-2023) was a faculty member of the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago from 1965 to 2008, where he was especially known for his work on bond duration. He has inserted a pencilled slip, noting, "His textbook & my freshman Yale teacher, G. G. Gaul, turned me on to economics. I didn't look at this till I was a graduate student in the mid 1960s. Didn't mean much to me then or now. Still 1st book by 1st USA Econ. Nobelist, RLW 07/01". Samuelson's inscription refers to his graduation from Chicago in 1935. Foundations is the Nobel prize-winning economist's first book, based on his Harvard doctoral dissertation, which established mathematics as the foundation of economics. "More than anyone else he [Samuelson] bears responsibility for the mathematical bent of economics in the late 20th century" (Pressman, pp. 162-3). Samuelson shows that the common mathematical structure underlying multiple branches of economics is based on a set of basic principles: the optimizing behaviour of agents and the stability of equilibrium for economic systems. Fundaburk 2039; Mattioli 3186. Steven Pressman, Fifty Major Economists, 1999. Octavo. Tables, graphs, and formulas in the text. Original red cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt, covers panelled in blind. Housed in custom brown quarter cloth solander box. Spine very slightly sunned, extremities very slightly rubbed, contents clean and unmarked. A very good copy.

First edition, first printing, with a loosely inserted slip signed by Samuelson at MIT in 1979, and formerly belonging to Ragnar Nurkse (1907-2007), a key founder of development economics, with his ink signature on the front free endpaper. In 1947, Nurkse had just joined Columbia University as an associate professor of economics. Interestingly, Samuelson does not appear to have been sympathetic to development economics, warning in 2004 that continued economic integration of global markets would damage high-wage jobs in more highly developed countries. Foundations is the Nobel Prize-winning economist's first book, which established mathematics as the foundation of economics, rather than an addendum. It is based on Samuelson's doctoral dissertation at Harvard. "Regarded by most economists as providing the mathematical foundations for contemporary economics. more than anyone else he bears responsibility for the mathematical bent of economics in the late 20th century" (Pressman, pp. 162-3). Samuelson demonstrates that the common mathematical structure underlying multiple branches of economics is based on a set of basic principles: the optimizing behaviour of agents and the stability of equilibrium for economic systems. Fundaburk 2039; Mattioli 3186. Steven Pressman, Fifty Major Economists, 1999. Octavo. Tables, graphs, and formulas in the text. Original red cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt, covers panelled in blind. Short pencil annotation on p. x. Cloth bright, minimal bumping and rubbing, faint toning to spine, minor browning and foxing to outer leaves: a very good copy indeed.

First Edition
First edition, first printing, of the book which established mathematics as the foundation of economics, rather than an addendum. This copy comes from the library of Charles J. Hitch (1910-1995), the economist and assistant secretary of defence from 1961 to 1965, with his ink stamp to the front pastedown and free endpaper, and his embossed stamp to the title page. Hitch served in the War Production Board during the Second World War, and worked as head of the RAND Corporation's Economics Division from 1948 to 1961. Samuelson's first book, based on his doctoral dissertation at Harvard, is one of the most influential economic texts of the 20th century. "His doctoral dissertation is regarded by most economists as providing the mathematical foundations for contemporary economics. more than anyone else he bears responsibility for the mathematical bent of economics in the late 20th century" (Pressman, pp. 162-3). Samuelson demonstrates that the common mathematical structure underlying multiple branches of economics is based on a set of basic principles: the optimising behaviour of agents and the stability of equilibrium as to economic systems. Fundaburk 2039; Mattioli 3186. Steven Pressman, Fifty Major Economists, 1999. Octavo. Tables, graphs, and formulas in the text. Original red cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt, covers bordered in blind. Light rubbing and scratching, sunning to spine, faint browning to endpapers: a very good copy.
