An antiqueJewish prayer book with English translation, the pages on the right side contain the prayers in Hebrew, and the pages on the left side are with the English translation. This antique translated prayer book was printed in the year 1857 in Vienna Austria . Translation was performed by Joseph Güns, a scholar and translator who made major contributions to Jewish liturgy. He is best known for this translation which is also known as "Tefilat Yeshurun." All pages are intact and readable. Small 32mo (4" to 5") book, can fit in a suit pocket. 877 pages. Remarkably good condition for a book printed in the 1857 edition. Cover is red leather. Exterior has rubbing wear on rear cover and 0.25" tear at head of spine. Cover lettering and designs as well as page-edges are gilt. Leather clasp is as new. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. No ownership markings. Title page implies printed in 1857. Pre-title page marked "Sig. A." Made in Austria. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. No Ownership Markings.

Includes a special prayer for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Includes blank 'Family Register' pages, for marriages, births and deaths and a 'Yahrzeit Calendar' for years 1891 to 1900. Isaac Kauffmann (18051884) was born in Bouxwiller, Alsace; in 1832 he moved to Frankfurt where he first set up a bookshop, and later in 1850 founded the Jewish publishing house named J. Kauffmann. He was succeeded by his son Ignatz who in 1900 took over the printing house of M. Lehrberger and Co., successor to Wolf Heidenheim's Hebrew publishing house. in 1909 Ignatz son Felix succeeded the business, which he continued to maintain even after his emigration to the USA during the Nazi era. The company published works of all fields of modern Jewish scholarship, art, music and Jewish religion.

Distinctive binding, incorporating bone and various metals, all mounted onto felt, with with brass borders and a brass clasp. 8vo. 18 by 12 cm. 629 pp. The front cover has the ten commandments as a centerpiece, which we assume is made with brass, and several decorative surrounds, the primary one in the shape of a Gothic window of sorts, with some fretwork cut-outs as ornamental decoration. Although printed in Germany, the book is written half in Hebrew, half in English. Leaves, of highly acidic pulp paper, heavily age toned. Felt on the cover is worn down on the spine. Hardcover. Velvet. Brass Trim, Clasp and other decoration. Bone and tin mounted decoration as well.
