Konstantinopel ist 1506 ein kosmopolitisches und tolerantes Handelszentrum, in dem sich Christen und Juden frei bewegen dürfen, Refugium der gerade erst von den katholischen Königen aus Spanien vertriebenen Juden, fremd und voller Verführungen für den asketisch lebenden, seinem Werk verpflichteten Michelangelo. Aber nach der Begegnung mit einer hermaphroditischen Schönheit aus Andalusien hat er die Vision einer Brücke, einer Brücke zwischen Orient und Okzident.
