This seminal work is characterized by its systematic organization, blending empirical observations with theoretical explanations. Macquer's meticulous attention to detail reflects the Enlightenment's intellectual spirit, shedding light on both the experimental techniques and philosophical underpinnings of chymistry. His clarity of prose and methodical approach serve to bridge the gap between practical laboratory work and the theoretical discourse of the time, positioning this text as a critical reference for scholars and practitioners alike. Pierre Joseph Macquer, a prominent figure in the Enlightenment movement, was deeply influenced by the scientific advancements of his era. His work as a chemist and educator culminated in this text, which was designed not just for professionals in the field, but also for students and laypeople eager to understand the burgeoning discipline of chemistry. His own experiences in both laboratory practice and teaching informed a perspective that emphasized accessibility alongside rigor, making his insights invaluable for a modern audience. I highly recommend 'Elements of the Theory and Practice of Chymistry' to anyone interested in the evolution of scientific thought and practice. This book not only serves as a foundational work in the history of chemistry but also acts as an engaging window into the intellectual currents of the 18th century. For students, educators, and enthusiasts alike, Macquer's text is an essential resource that invites the reader to appreciate the intricate blend of art and science that defines chymistry. 496 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the fifth edition of 'Elements of the Theory and Practice of Chymistry,' Pierre Joseph Macquer presents a systematic and comprehensive exploration of chemical principles during the Enlightenment period. Written with clarity and precision, the text is both an instructional guide and a philosophical discourse, blending empirical observation with theoretical constructs. Macquer emphasizes the experimental foundations of chemistry, bridging the gap between alchemical traditions and the emerging scientific methodologies of the 18th century. Through detailed illustrations, practical examples, and meticulous explanations, he fosters an accessible understanding of chemical processes pivotal to the burgeoning field of modern science. Pierre Joseph Macquer, a prominent figure in the scientific community of his time, was deeply influenced by the intellectual currents of the Enlightenment. His contributions to the field of chemistry, particularly in the realm of medicine and pharmacy, underscore his commitment to advancing knowledge through methodical experimentation. Macquer's integration of theoretical frameworks with practical applications reflects his desire to democratize science, making it available to both scholars and practitioners alike. Highly recommended for historians of science, students, and practitioners, this work serves as a cornerstone in the study of chemistry. Macquer's text not only elucidates foundational chemical concepts but also provides readers with insight into the transformative period of the 18th century, encouraging a renewed appreciation for the intersection of theory and practice in scientific inquiry. 488 pp. Englisch.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Macquer s Elà mens de chymie-theorique (1749) and Elà mens de chymie-pratique (1751), translated by Andrew Reid from the 1756 editions. The theoretical section lays out the principles of chemistry, and the practical section presents a course of chemistry including engravings of apparatus. Macquer was one of the leading chemists of his day, and his works were fundamental texts in the field. He made notable contributions in the application of chemistry to industry. Macquer wrote his Elements for people with no previous chemical knowledge. He began with an account of the four elements, air, water, earth, and fire (of which phlogiston was a modification), briefly discussed affinity, and the considered compound substances in order of their increasing complexity, mineral, vegetable, and animal. He was careful not to mention any substance before acquainting the reader with it: for example, acids, alkalis, and salts were described before metals, so in the account of acids their power of dissolving metals was not mentioned (DSB). This first edition in English is scarce. Thomas Jefferson owned this edition (but not this set). He called for the book in his recommended library for an English gentleman. First English Edition, 2 Vols 8vo. Cont. leather rebacked with modern maroon morrocco labels. I: endpapers, xix (including title page and ½ title), 419 pp (1errata), with plates I, II, V and VI following p 416 (plates III and IV) torn out; pp 417-419 constitute Explanation of the Plates (e.g. I-IV as issued)); II: endpapers, viii (including title page, but ½ title not called for), 414 pp. Ex-library (Dropsie College, Collection of Isaac Leeser paper labels inside front boards, Leeser Library stamp on title page each volume).
