About this Item: London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1914], 1914. Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, pictorial endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription to front blank. Lightly rubbed at extremities with some minor scuffs to the lower board and spotting to edges of text block. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 24 plates with printed tissue-guards. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the illustrator on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To Miss Bernadine Murphy with my kindest regards, Kay Nielsen, April 1947". Loosely inserted is a one-page autograph letter signed by Nielsen to the book's owner and dated October 10, 1948. Nielsen thanks Murphy for what seems to have been her attempt to find him work as an art teacher. "It was a charming act of yours to mention my name and talk about me as a teacher of art. It would have been wonderful if such arrangements could have been made - but already at that time we were about to leave", as he and his wife had been "trying to arrange our return to Denmark to join Ulla's mother. It has taken a lot of effort". Nielsen had been living in the US since 1936 and working for, among others, the Walt Disney animation studio. His finances became precarious during this period, and he and his wife received much help from friends. It seems that Murphy was one of these long-time friends and admirers: a gift inscription indicates that the book was given to her by a friend in 1914 and kept long enough to be signed by the author when she met him in the 1940s. About this Item: Garden City Publishing Co./Doubleday, Garden City, New York, U.S.A., 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Nielsen, Kay (illustrator). First Thus. Collection of fairy & folk tales selected from Norske Folkeeventyr, each complemented by both pen-and-ink & full-color illustrations by renowned artist, Kay Nielsen (V. Candell is also mentioned on spine, though all of the drawings look like Nielsen). No date in book, c. 1930. This is a lovely collection of classic children's books issued in the early-mid-20th century by Garden City Publishing Co. in NY, all of which were cloth-bound hardcovers with a colored paper pastedown to the front board, each illustrated by a famous artist of the day. Inside is a color frontispiece & 7 full-page, full-color & b&w illustrations by Nielsen throughout the text (204 pages). MAJOR FLAW: the book suffered water damage, & all of the plates show dampstaining around all 3 outer edges. Endpapers & front matter also stained, with black dye from the cloth covering the boards bleeding in; the text pages are barely impacted, but ARE moderately tanned. The binding is secure & straight. Rubbing to all extremities, heavier along bottom edge from shelf. Bumped corners. NO writing/underlining/highlighting; NOT ex-lib. No DJ.Basically a READING COPY to introduce the stories & lovely art of Nielsen, but definitely not in collectible condition! About this Item: London: Hodder and Stroughton, 1914, 1914. Perhaps the Most Beautiful Children's Book Ever Published [NIELSEN, Kay, Illustrator. [ASBJÖRNSEN, Peter Christen, and Jörgen Ingebreksten Moe]. East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Old Tales from the North. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1914]. The first trade edition of Kay Nielsen's greatest work. Large quarto (11 1/8 x 8 5/8 in; 283 x 220 mm). [2], 206 , [1 printer's imprint], [1 blank] pp. Twenty-five mounted color plates with descriptive tissue guards, numerous black and white text illustrations. Publisher's dark blue cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Pictorial endpapers in gold and black. Minimal rubbing to extremities and spine edges. Small circular bookplate on verso of front endpaper. A near fine copy, the gilt on the binding bright, the text block totally free from the usual 'foxing' that one usually sees. Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen's designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring.Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen's objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story's emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales). "As is noted in the preface to East of the Sun and West of the Moon, these folktales from the works of Asbjörnsen and Moe are by no means meant for the nursery. The Danish artist, Nielsen, being thoroughly at home with the narrative tradition that they represent, was well equipped to present their strangeness and cruelty, as well as their humor and heroism. Though his drawings are highly decorative, they are nonetheless true illustrations. The contrast between Nielsen's bizarre style, filled with echoes of nineties illustrators. and his primitive subject matter greatly enhances the piquancy of the book. It would be hard to find an Art Nouveau troll elsewhere." (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1814. #333, p. 209). Seller Inventory # 04765

About this Item: Garden City, NY Garden City Publishing Co., Inc. nd. The Garden City issue, printed from the plates of the Doran First American edition. Illustrated with eight colour plates and numerous black and white drawings by Kay Nielsen. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth with pictorial pastedown by Victor Candell on front cover, the spine lettered and pictorially decorated in green, in the scarce pictorial dustjacket designed by Candell. 204 pp. An especially fine and bright copy of a book rarely found in such excellent condition, the black cloth, pristine and beautifully preserved by the fully intact dustjacket which has only a very little evidence of minor edgewear, the text very fine and fresh. RARE IN DUSTJACKET. FIRST OF THE ISSUE AND EDITON AND A BOOK VERY ELUSIVE IN SUCH EXCELLENT CONDITION. This collection of sixteen tales was initiated by Nielsen in 1912, though it was not originally published until 1924. Nielsen s style and artistry would later reach mass audiences in Disney s early animated films, perhaps most notably "Fantasia". This is one of only five titles illustrated by Nielsen. The issue is textually identical to Doran's edition. These old-wives' fables "are the romances of the childhood of Nations: they are the never-failing springs of sentiment, of sensation, of heroic example, from which primevil peoples drank their fill at will" (- from the Introduction). About this Item: London Hodder and Stroughton [1914], 1914. First edition. The best of the various issues of the first editions. Illustrated with 25 beautiful tipped-in color plates by Kay Nielsen, each with captioned tissue guards, as well as numerous detailed black and white illustrations also by Nielsen throughout the text. 4to, publisher s original navy blue cloth with gilt lettering and elaborate pictorial decorations on the spine and upper cover, and with decorative illustrated endleaves printed in black and gilt. 206 pp. A bright and clean copy of this rare book, the blue cloth rich and unfaded with vivid gilt, with only a bit of shelving at the tips and edges, the colour plates are all very fine and are truly fine impressions, the inevitable foxing to a few of the leaves at the front and rear and scattered very lightly throughout. AN IMPORTANT AND SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF NIELSEN S BEST BOOK. Fifteen old Norwegian folk-tales from Asbjornsen and Moe s Norske Folkeeventyr , have been selected and magnificently portrayed by Nielson. Only his second book commission, this collection of paintings earned him enormous public recognition and equal standing with Dulac and Rackham as a leading children s book illustrator. Here, in its larger format, we are offered the luxury of viewing all 25 illustrations with utter clarity. "In these elegant paintings, he combined qualities of Oriental design with those unique features of his native Scandinavia: The melancholic mystery of a bleak Nordic twilight seemed to cast a magical spell on the images themselves. If it were not for the outbreak of war that year, there is no doubt that Nielsen would have continued to produce many more of these remarkable paintings for children, to establish him as a great master of the Northern fairy tale."-Susan Meyer. These captivating old tales at once exotic and somehow familiar, of princes and princesses, giants and mythic goats, all combine to give us a glimpse into the Norwegian imagination. And we cannot help but agree that: "The quaintness, the tenderness, the grotesque yet realistic intermingling of actuality with supernaturalism, by which the original Norske folkeeventyr are characterized, will make an appeal to all, as represented in the pictures of Kay Nielsen. And these imperishable traditions, whose bases are among the very roots of all antiquity, are here reincarnated in line and colour, to the delight of all who ever knew or now shall know them."-Preface. [Surely,] these old-wives' fables "are the romances of the childhood of Nations: they are the never-failing springs of sentiment, of sensation, of heroic example, from which primeval peoples drank their fill at will" (- from the Introduction). This is one of only five books that Nielsen illustrated before going to work as an animator for Disney. The best of the first editions is quite scarce and in a larger and more decorative format then the more common American edition. This copy is handsome and bright and quite a nice copy indeed. About this Item: London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1914], 1914. Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover in gilt, pictorial endpapers, black and gilt. Cloth fine, bright and unmarked, sporadic light foxing but generally clean internally. A very nice copy. Tipped-in colour frontispiece, 24 colour plates with printed tissue-guards, with black and white illustrations to text. First Nielsen edition, trade issue. The richness of the Danish artist Nielsen's colour images for this lavish illustrated book of Norse pagan mythology was achieved by a four-colour process, in contrast to many of the illustrations prepared by his contemporaries, such as Rackham and Dulac, which characteristically utilized a traditional three-colour process. "By general consent, Nielsen's most spectacular and celebrated book is East of the Sun and West of the Moon, old tales from the North, translated from the Norwegian of Peter C. Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe (devoted collectors of Scandinavian folk lore in the mid-nineteenth century). First published in 1914, this beautiful volume has been reprinted many times up to the present day. Nielsen's unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations" (Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, p. 90).
