Interior impecable. What happened from 1492 to 1519, when Columbus and the Spaniards were staking out an American empire? Carl O. Sauer, a geographer who has studied land, nature, and man in Latin America for many years, has turned his attention to these beginnings and uncovered clues along a trail in part unknown an in places forgotten. By checking documents of the time with personal knowledge of land forms, vegetation, fauna, and ethnography he has placed the Spanish Caribbean beginnings in a new context. Columbus was the promoter of an illusory geography of mythical gold lands. His obsession with gold an insistence on the escessive rights that he had secured brought the first Spanish venture overseas to the edge of failure. His successors were more competent administrators but continued and intensified the quest for gold and the pressure on the hapless natives. In one generation the natives living about the Caribbean Sea were reduced from millions to a few remnant handfuls. Men of vivsion and good will came too late to prevent final disaster, but laid the foundation of colonial policy that would in time benefit other parts of Spanish America.
