Slight waviness to first few leaves. 63pp. Hall's second collection of poems. Laid in is an ALS from Hall to the owner of this book, dated August 18, 1955 on his stationary, from Cambridge, Massachusetts (where he was then a Fellow at Harvard). "Dear [_____], Thanks so much for your letter! Things like that pay for years of effort. I am so glad, too, that my under-the-surface idea (the monsterdom implicit everywhere) came through to you. This clarity, which I do attempt, is still considered a bit old-fashioned. But to say what one means can never be really out of date, I hope. I think clarity, explicitness, and precision are on their way back in. I had one about Connecticut in The New Yorker last October, & a couple more since. All of my poems are going to be published as a book next February by the Viking Press, under the title Exiles and Marriages. We have been envying you your California all through the cold of winter and the heat of summer. I hope we will be out near you before too long. There is absolutely no telling where teaching will take me. Thanks very much for your letter! Sincerely, Don Hall". This letter precedes the publication of Hall's first book. Also laid in is a newspaper clipping announcing Hall's winning of the Lamont Prize for that book, presumably included by Hall with the letter since it clearly is from a Massachusetts newspaper. In addition, there is a clipping of Hall's poems "The Sleeping Giant" from The New Yorker issue of August 6, 1955. The ALS is folded once. The front endpaper is offset from the news clipping. Book and ALS. Q18800.
