Hardcover. Condition: Good. 8vo (15cm), contemporary boards, spine covered in vellum. Marcolini's device on title, cursive type, ff. 40. First edition in Italian, translated from the 1542 original Latin by Francesco Strozzi. A very rare text and the only published by the engraver Giovanni Britto (but impressed for him by Francesco Marcolini, with his classic italic type). The author, a native of the Low Countries, describes in this book the attempts of the Duke of Gelderland to defend (with the support of the French), his independence, which was threatened by the Habsburg power. The Duke was forced to yield to Charles V his duchy with the Treaty of Venloo, signed the September 7, 1543. Casali, who could not see ever personally this text, did not even know the identity of the editor-engraver, never mentioned by Vasari or its contemporaries, too. CNCE 28612; Casali, Marcolini, no. 68 ("rare"). The title-page is shown in Johnson, Italian 16th Century (1926), pl. 34; BMC STC It. p. 623, not in Adams.
