Couverture souple. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Stanford University Press, 2021. First edition. Paperback. 8vo, 791 pages. Contents: The Case of Wagner / Twilight of the Idols / The Antichrist / Ecce Homo / Dionysus Dithyrambs / Nietzsche Contra Wagner. Afterword by Andreas Urs Sommer. The year 1888 marked the last year of Friedrich Nietzsche's intellectual career and the culmination of his philosophical development. In that final productive year, he worked on six books, all of which are now, for the first time, presented in English in a single volume. Together these new translations provide a fundamental and complete introduction to Nietzsche's mature thought and to the virtuosity and versatility of his most fully developed style. Scrupulously edited, this critical volume also includes commentary by esteemed Nietzsche scholar Andreas Urs Sommer. First Edition. Two Reference Works by Hans Joachim Mette - Essential Information for Any Scholarly Study of NietzscheHaving received his doctorate under Werner Jaeger supervised by Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellnedorff, Hans Mette worked for three years at the Nietzsche Archiv in Weimar where he was entrusted with the publication of Nietzsche's philological works. Later, he also took over the edition of his Nietzsche's early writings. Mette came into conflict with Nietzsche's sister, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, who was responsible for the work because of her extremely questionable editorial principles. Mette later edited other writings by Nietzsche together with fellow Nietzsche scholar, Karl Schlechta. His most important contribution to Nietzsche studies was his 1933 classification of Nietzsche's works, a system that has been followed by scholars ever since. These two early publications by Mette lay out the some of the specifics that led to that classification system. the publisher's original grey wrap with black lettering to the front cover. The edges are very lightly chipped with a 1½" closed tear along the top front edge of the spine. Overall, a remarkably well preserved copy of this delicate work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.The Sachlicher Vorbericht is without a title page (as issued?) and bound with later marbled boards and ¾ black linen. Otherwise, a near fine copy.
