Contemp. half brown calf, red leather label; sl. rubbed. John Adamson, 1787-1855, from Newcastle, assisted his merchant brother in Lisbon until French invasion threatened in 1807. His knowledge of Portuguese enabled him to publish literary translations, and as a lawyer, as well as taking part in Newcastle public life and acting as Secretary to the Literary and Philosophical Society he amassed a considerable Portuguese Library of which a catalogue was published in 1836. The Library was destroyed by fire in 1849 and poems in this volume refer to this calamity. This volume contains several of Adamson's handsome privately printed pamphlets. Contents: (ADAMSON, Edward Hussey) Obituary notice of the late John Adamson, Esq. Newcastle-upon-Tyne: printed by Thomas & James Pigg, 1856; ADAMSON, John. Lusitania Illustrata: notices of the history, antiquities, literature, &c. of Portugal. Literary Dept. Pt II. Minstrelsy. Newcastle upon Tyne: printed by M.A. Richardson, 1846.
